St John’s Wort

St John’s Wort is a flowering plant and is, actually, the crowning plant of the Hypericaceae family, with the family being named after St. John’s Wort’s scientific name. St John’s Wort is native to temperate parts of Europe and Asia but has spread to many temperate regions worldwide.

The usage of St John’s Wort began in Ancient Roman times and has been discovered as being a key ingredient for health, which has been used to treat a wide variety of illnesses, of the time. Indeed, the red oily extract of St John’s Wort has been used to dress wounds for millennia and even received its given name due to its popular usage by the Knights Hospitaller’s detachment known as the Order of St John.

In modern times, some of these usages are reflected, however, it is most commonly known now for its usage as a natural anti-depressant and mood enhancer.
